Body of Knowledge - Licensing
Last updated June 8, 2016
License Types
The body of knowledge embodied within BIM Excellence (BIMe) and the BIM Dictionary (BIMd) has been developed by ChangeAgents AEC pty ltd (CA) based on the academic research of Dr. Bilal Succar. The Intellectual Property (IP) is organized into five categories (called BIMe Knowledge Sets) and is available for 3rd party use under three types of licenses:
- Type A licence is available for non-commercial-use [1] with proper attribution to Dr Bilal Succar under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-commercial Share-alike 3.0 Unported licence. Unless noted, all materials posted on BIMframework.com fall under this license type.
- Type B licenses are available for non-commercial-use with proper attribution to ChangeAgents AEC pty ltd. Any individual or organization (including educational and other not-for-profit entities) will need to accept a Terms of Use statement and/or sign a Knowledge Partnership Agreement [2] before the IP can be used in any form. Type B Licences may or may not include a ‘permission-to-use’ fee:
- Type B1 license is free
- Type B2 license requires a one-off payment covering afixed use
- Type B3 license requires a payment covering a fixed duration (e.g. annual subscription)
- Type C Licenses are commercial agreements available to CA Client’s and Affiliates:
- Type C1 license is a fee per-use license granted to Clients
- Types C2-C5 licences cover varied types of Affiliate Agreements
- Type X Licenses are Open Community Licenses and are available for commercial use under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License, Type X License do not carry a warranty or acceptance of liability (please refer to Terms of Use)

License Exemptions
Certain tools and templates – even if typically requiring a Type C license – are available for free or at a nominal cost through the BIMe Initiative. For example, a number of online assessment modules can be made available under a Type B license for not-for-profit entities to conduct market-wide competency benchmarking and/or educational activities. Exemptions are provided on a case-by-case basis.
Please contact us for clarifications or additional information; thank you.
